i may keep it for downloading because of the low cost, but disappointed Netflix US not working anymore in Canada...I may try another provider...
It works as advertised and certainly provides a great level of security. However, some companies, netflix, hulu, other networks, FINANCIAL institutions (mine), etc know that it is a PIA network and I cannot gain access without disconnecting PIA. Many of these concerns have been better described by others here in this forum. I am planning to relocate out of the USA and I am concerned that I may lose some of the most important reasons that really made this service appealing. Time will tell.
I really have enjoyed having the PIA services. They have been helpful and accommodating. That is until Netflix decided to block anyone using a VPN. PIA says it is out of their control. But it is not a legal matter- it is Netflix business decision. And PIA is not interested in challenging it. With this disruption, I don't see the value in the PIA service, I am very unhappy to report. Very surprised in the roll over attitude of PIA.
Provided what was required and asked for......
The service was good until Netflix started blocking VPN providers. If the problem persists, I do not see any value in having VPN or netflix.
I love PIA's service except for two matters . . . 1 The VPN slows down internet speeds 2 On two very different laptops in recent years doing an 'upgrade' leaves me with no VPN at all. I've talked to tech support on both occasions without resolution, and so I sit with an outdated version which is 'vulnerable' by all accounts. Once in a while I'll try to upgrade, but make a point of creating a restore point first. Then, when the upgrade fails - every time - I run system restore. A couple of years of this issue is 23 months too many. UPDATE: November, 2016 I recently tried the upgrade again, and yes!, it was a success. I have upped my review to 4 stars.
I have used it for Torrents and the speeds have been really bad lately. I sometimes have luck connecting to another server, but it takes a lot of time to figure out which one. Unfortunately, my account was on auto-renew and now I had to pay for another year of something I just don't use anymore because of the very slow speeds.
There's nothing new to add here. Just read through some of the reviews that were posted by real IT security experts and you'll realize that you should steer away from this company and its services.
For some reason, Private Internet Access won't cryptographically sign their software releases. This seems like a tremendous oversight from a company marketing security and privacy software. When users have complained to them, they've responded with claims that they can't sign it because it's based on open-source software - these two things have nothing to do with each other, and plenty of open source software is signed (the FIrefox web browser, for example). They've also claimed that they can't sign it because that would require revealing their source code to a third party. That's blatantly untrue - signing doesn't work that way. Second, if their code is really as secure as they claim, they should be proud to be showing it to third parties! Security through obscurity (i.e. "let's make sure nobody sees our code and realizes how insecure it is") isn't real security. Either they're deliberately lying to their users, or they're deeply ignorant about basic principles of security and software development. Either way, I'm not particularly inclined to trust them.
While the interface for the VPN client is a little weak from a design perspective and may not be the easiest to work if you are a non-technical user, the service itself is very fast, functional, and works in almost any circumstance I've been in (including strict firewall situations). The few times I had to contact support was a responsive, helpful, and overall pleasant experience.
